The staff's Christmas calendar

The staff's Christmas calendar

December is fast approaching, and I, as the manager, am busy planning this year's Christmas calendar for the staff.

The highlight of the year (both for me and the staff)! This is a tradition we've had for a number of years, and it's just as much fun every year! What do we do? As the manager, I buy in/fill the calendar bags. The content may be different, and the sum of the content varies from day to day. To name a few things that have been involved, one day there may be a lucky draw and a bag of chocolates, the next day there may be a 30-minute longer break (I then stand in the department during this time so that they are not short of staff). Other calendar bags have, for example, contained a superhero cape, a note saying that you get paid time off for the rest of the day (we always retire at around 12 o'clock, and I was on duty for the rest of the shift), a hat + mittens, a gift card for a bouquet of flowers, a dancing Santa hat and much much more. Every working day from 1 December up to and including 23 December we draw a gift bag (no draw at weekends). Staff who are at work on the day of the draw are included in the draw. This applies to permanent staff, temps, students etc., everyone is treated equally here. Each name is written on a piece of paper, and then we draw.
This is a motivational boost for the staff in December, and we have a lot of fun with both the draw and the presentation of content. The breaks in December will be extra exciting! The staff deserve an extra boost, especially in these times, so I recommend those who have the opportunity to try this. The budget can be adapted to the individual nursery school. The price for our nursery is perhaps 1-2 days with a substitute in total (we often calculate costs in substitute hours, and adjust the budget from year to year), but throughout the year I save this by taking a few shifts/hours in the department myself rather than a substitute etc. Got the thumbs up from the occupational health service for this measure, and I have no doubt that it is worth the cost!
