Tom - the king of the world

Tom - the king of the world

Author: Anne Ellingsen Illustrator: Akin Duzakin What do you do when a child decides everything and feels like the king of the world?

A beautiful and funny book about a serious topic.

One day a new boy starts kindergarten. He is the best at everything, flies on a magic carpet and is going to be king when he grows up. But is he really telling the truth? And how does it go when he wants to rule over everyone else?

What do professionals say about the book?

The book is very well balanced for use in the nursery; suitable with text, and large, nice pictures. This makes it good to read to several children, and is also suitable for just looking at to create conversation. Most of the points in the book seem to be recognized and understood by our group of children; but those floating like balloons take some time for anyone to understand, or connect with what it may represent. Everyone likes the last spread/end :)

We have children in the group who are similar to Tom, and thus also children who receive a little Tom treatment. For the time being, we have chosen to let the children get to know the book a little by having an adult talk about it while we looked at pictures, and a little later read it aloud to a group. Eventually, we want to make the book available in the reading corner, so the children can look at it on their own initiative too. It will probably also be appropriate for the Tom child in the group to have time alone with a member of staff to read and discuss the contents of the book. We hope it can help process experiences and experience that there are other children who experience the same/or something similar to themselves.
