Here are tips for an activity you can use with children
to practice words, and to sort words according to categories/overarching concepts. Sorting words into categories supports children in the process of acquiring vocabulary.
By sorting words they learn into categories, they get pegs to hang the words on, and it thus becomes easier to learn and to remember the words they learn.
You can practice general concepts by talking about categories with the children, using concrete examples, or by using pictures.
I have created a category house that can be used to sort words/images by overarching term. The children can draw a picture and say the word on the picture, and then which category it belongs to. For example draw a picture of an apple and say "apple, it's fruit" or "sweater, it's clothes"
