Easter chickens
Last week we picked sticks on a walk. This week, the oldest children have made yarn tassels from cardboard and yarn. (Make 2 pieces of "crumbs" from cardboard.
The hole in the middle must not be too big, then it will take FOREVERS to finish. I recommend trying one out first, so you can possibly adjust the size before the children start. I used a coffee cup as the outer measure, and the inside of a roll of tape as the measure of the inner ring)
The children started by using their fingers on the first rounds, and switched to using a knitting needle as the hole got smaller. We finished with a couple of rounds where we used a large blunt needle.
When the ring was tight, it was cut around, and a string tied tightly around between the pieces of cardboard, before the cardboard was torn and removed.
We glued the stick pieces with a glue gun, on a cardboard circle (we used the rest of the circles we didn't use for the yarn) so that it became a nest for the chicken. Finally, we glued on islands and a beak on the chicken, and then it was ready to be placed in the nest.
This activity takes a bit of time, but it's really nice to keep doing it. A lot of learning; patience, waiting for your turn, fine motor skills, use of different senses, etc.! The children were allowed to sit outside on the veranda and continue with the donuts when the weather was nice.
